Transit WGTN Disclaimer

Metlink in Wellington have been awesome enough to provide me with the data used in this Application. Beyond that this application is developed and maintained by eLounge Ltd and is not connected to MetLink in any other way. Timetables are correct for a 3 month period of time and will continue working after that, but updates to the timetable will be delivered through updates to the application on Transit NZ.

A quick user guide

Touch either the bus, train or ferry icon from the top panel of the screen.

Slide through the list of different routes until you find the route that you’ll be travelling on. Once you select a route the stations scrollers will appear.

Scroll thru the list of stations for the route that you picked. The left list represents the station that you’ll be traveling from (departure) and the right list is the station that you’ll be traveling to (destination). Sometimes the list will flip, meaning that you’ve changed direction.

When you’ve picked your stations the schedule will show at the bottom of the screen.

If there’s a route and station combination that you use frequently then press the “Favourite” button to add it to your list of favourites. If you have at least one favourite the application will automatically open to your favourites list and display your favourite routes whenever you start the application. It’s a quick and convenient way to view the timetables of the routes that you most often use.

A BIG SHOUT OUT!!

A big thanks to Adrian White for coming up with the idea for this interface and for all his suggestions on how to build it. If you live in Wellington and take the train to work then also consider downloading his App - Next Train. Adrian will be helping me push this application out to more cities around the world, so keep your eyes peeled.

Thanks also to Sam Douglas for helping out with the artwork needed in this App. As most iPhone developers will tell you having someone who knows a bit about Photoshop is a huge boon, and Sam is a great help whenever I get stuck.

A schedule on a single page

The Transit App’s use a radically different interface from Timetable NZ and most other timetable applications on the App Store. Rather then trying to reimplement the standard windows paradigm of navigating thru menus and moving from screen to screen to make selections I’ve tried to use the power of a touch interface to make all the information and controls available in a single screen. By keeping things intuitive, visual and simple a reasonable complex set of interactions between the user and the iPhone can be executed in a way that is immediate and natural.  Hopefully we’ll start seeing more and more developers bringing out applications that change the way that we interact with touch screen accplications.

What this App is for

Think of this App as a pocket timetable for your most frequently used commutes. After you install the App spend 5 minutes finding the routes that you travel and add them as favourites. You’ll have a quick and handle timetable in your pocket. This App is not a route finder and nor does it offer real time information. The Google Maps App that comes with your iPhone does a great job as a route finder, so you can use that instead.

September 2010: Alert! Some of the incoming data routes have changed for the Perth App. This can cause your favourites to become corrupt. To repair please:

  1. 1.Ensure App is present in iTunes

  2. 2.Delete the App from your iPhone or iPod Touch

  3. 3.Resych. This will refresh your database and allow you to setup your favourites again. A patch will be released soon.
